Electrical Muscle Stimulation

Guide to Electric Muscle Stimulation from Your New Canaan Chiropractor

At New Canaan Chiropractic, we have been sharing the benefits of electrical muscle stimulation with residents of CT and NY for many years. When you first visit our office, Dr. Williams will assess your musculoskeletal system to determine how electrical muscle stimulation will benefit you. Read on to learn more about electric muscle stimulation and how it can help you.

What is Electric Muscle Stimulation?

Injuries can cause a lot of problems, one of which is called muscular atrophy. When you are unable to engage a muscle, less protein is sent to that area. This causes muscle loss and weakness. Electric muscle stimulation, also referred to as EMS or ESTIM, is a therapy through which electrical impulses are sent to weakened muscles. This stimulation helps prevent atrophy, treat pain, and rebuild muscle strength.

How Does a Chiropractor Use ESTIM?

Electric muscle stimulation uses electrodes to deliver the electrical pulses. The electrodes are placed on the patient’s skin to target the area of concern. As chiropractors address issues with the nervous system, this is the area in which they utilize ESTIM. Chiropractors place the electrodes in targeted areas of the body to block pain signals to the brain. While the ESTIM blocks these signals, the electrical pulses also produce additional endorphins, the body’s natural pain relievers.

What Conditions Can Electric Muscle Stimulation Treat?

ESTIM can be used to treat a variety of conditions. Our chiropractor uses it to relieve pain associated with the following:

  • Acute and Chronic neck and back pain
  • Arthritis
  • Chronic joint and muscle pain
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Chronic headaches
  • Sports injuries
  • Tennis elbow
  • Bursitis
  • Fibromyalgia

ESTIM may also be used for the following:

  • Rebuild weakened muscles
  • Increase blood flow to injured areas
  • Reduce stress and tension
  • Prevent fatigue
  • Reverse muscular atrophy
  • Reduce swelling and inflammation
  • Treat muscle groups overstimulated during exercise

Is ESTIM Right for Me?

Electric muscle stimulation is beneficial for many people, but treatment is never a one size fits all approach. Dr. Williams can help determine if ESTIM is a good choice for your needs.  He will listen to your concerns, diagnose your condition, and find the best course of action for treatment.
